July 2008

Dear Friends,

The saying, "Knee high by the fourth of July," was the measure that summer was in full swing. It had to do with the height of corn planted in our gardens! However, these days it appears our weather, not only in Seattle, but globally, is all mixed up. It is either too much rain or not enough, snowing when it should be warm or warm when it should be cold. Many communities are experiencing the harsh extremes of Nature.

Many earth-based cultures believe the earth to be a living being and revere her as our mother. What we do to her we do to ourselves. Perhaps the earth is simply trying to find balance with all of these climatic and geological changes.

Sages of the past have shared their infinite wisdom that all living beings come from the same consciousness and that Mother Nature is the manifestation of that consciousness. We have either forgotten this truth, or we have not been taught this by our elders. Whatever the reason we can no longer ignore it. Humanity is becoming its own worst enemy because we are destroying the harmony and balance of Nature, which sustains our very life.

A non-profit organization called, "GreenFriends" has a mission to help us re-awaken the awareness of our unity with all of creation and develop our love and respect for Nature. It is every adult's responsibility to teach the children (those we are parenting and those in our communities) to do so as well. Remember, whatever the age, children learn through observation.

GreenFriends has a few ideas to help you begin:

  1. Make a resolve to increase your care and attention of what you consume taking only what is necessary from Mother Nature and not to unduly destroy anything in Nature. This can be practiced daily with such simple acts like carpooling, recycling (even if you have to bring it back to your house), not wasting food, conserving water and more.
  2. Plant nine or more trees every year and lovingly care for them. Encourage children to participate. Native cultures believe the trees to be the lungs of Mother Earth. They are vitally important for our own breath and contribute to the balance in the climate.
  3. Devote time every day to connecting with Mother Nature such as caring for plants, or walking or meditating in Nature.

"The very existence of human beings on Earth depends on Nature." Amma

Blessings of love and joy this month,

Colette and Bruce
