Bhangra is a traditional folk dance of celebration, joy and thanksgiving. It is traditionally associated with the harvest in Punjab, the northern state of India and Pakistan. The dance is accompanied by the lively beat of the dhol (two sided drum played with two sticks) with lyrics ranging anywhere from patriotism to the emotional words of love ballads.
Bhangra is a part of all types of celebrations like weddings, anniversaries, New Years and any happy occasion. During the last thirty years, Bhangra has had a surge in popularity worldwide, both in traditional form and as a fusion with genres such as hip-hop, house, and reggae. Bhangra continues to move into mainstream culture and is spreading rapidly!
It is a high-energy, exciting and joyful dance, coordinating footwork along with upper body, shoulder, arm and hand movements. Bhangra is for both men and women.
